Maui
I am leaving Blue Bie anchored for a month, am not performing any maintenance work and just go kitesurfing.
Every morning, I am driving the mountain bike, the kite and the board with the dinghy to the beach. There I am loading the board on the board rack and the kite on my back and pedal a few miles to the kitebeach. Soon I know everybody on the beach; not only due to my ‘rig’, but also because I am much more outgoing when travelling alone. But I am also spending more time with myself and my thoughts; so much that I am usually having dinner on board by myself.
Sometimes I wonder why I bother sailing around the world, if all I want to do is kitesurfing! I can’t get enough of the flow of kitesurfing. One perfect day is following the next; the wind is blowing moderately, the waves allow smooth rides and the sun is glittering high in the sky. I am not going to my limits; enjoy playing with the waves and the wind. Kitesurfing with a wave board is more playful than with a twintip board and I love putting fast bottom turns at the foot of the waves and radical cut-backs at the lip. I hardly ever look happier than after a good day kitesurfing!
But as much as I enjoy kitesurfing, I am interested in travelling; discovering and encountering people; learning about social and economic systems. This curiosity drives me forward; allows lingering but not settling.
I was planning to sail to Alaska and Canada this summer and got used to the thought of having no heating. But having no hot shower in the colder climate? Not really! Also, the season up north is very short and the thought of spending half a year cruising down the American Pacific Coast and then some more time in the Baja California, where novice American sailors are organizing everybody’s life because they can’t live without rules, doesn’t motivate me. These thoughts have been motivating only a few months ago, but after some time in civilized Hawaii, I am ready for the South Pacific again!
